Lighting Practice

Recently we were introduced to many different lighting concepts. Each of these concepts are used in film making in order create different moods and portray emotions and thoughts of the characters.
The first of these lighting styles is high key lighting, used to create a bright vibrant feel to the shot. Here is the example photo me and phoebe took:
The next type of lighting we learned about is natural light. This is simply light created by natural sources. Here is our example:
The next one is background lighting which usually creates a silhouette of the characters in the shot, commonly used in romance movies. Here is our go at it:
Another lighting type we learned about was Chiaroscuro lighting. This is where light is used to create an extreme contrast between objects/parts of the shot. For example:
Finally, we learned about artificial lighting. This is where man made light is used for a specific effect whether that is to create a warm look or maybe a glow of an unusual colour depending on the scene. Here is the example we took:
(We turned on the main light in the room).

Preliminary Task: Final Video

Evaluation: How well did we meet the brief?

Evaluation: My contributtion to the group

During the production of our film I took on my share of tasks. My primary task was to operate the camera and film all of the scenes for the film, which I did and found to be interesting and challenging because I had to find the perfect angles and shots that would make the scene more interesting.
Another thing I did was help make the setting perfect along with Phoebe and Shannon. I helped to create the perfect lighting by blocking out the natural light and using an artificial light for effect. Furthermore, I assisted Phoebe with the editing, giving my contribution and opinion when I could, pointing out errors in order to perfect the continuity.
Overall I think I had a valuable contribution to the making of Black Widow and along with Phoebe and Shannon, managed to create something I'm proud of.

Evalutation: What have I learned during the making of my film?

Evaluation: Positives and Negtives

In the preliminary task, a lot of things went well for my group. First of all we worked together very well as a group and allowed each other to share out the roles, giving us all a valid part in the making of our film. The setting of our production was perfectly chosen by us and we worked together to create the perfect lighting, backdrop and atmosphere for each scene. Also we got to shoot a wide variety of shots and angles to create an interesting and different movie to what other people have done. We managed to incorporate each of the features such as match on action and the 180 degree rule in our film so we succeeded in doing as the task asked us to. I liked the fact that we chose to make our film black and white because it made us individual. Furthermore, our editing went very well and we managed to make each scene and shot flow smoothly together as well as creating an interesting soundtrack and place it over our film to suit each frame. On the contrary, there were a few things we didn’t like as much as we would have wanted to. For example, some of the scenes we shot were slightly unrealistic and didn’t make sense in terms of the way we shot them. For example, during the pan up of Phoebes body, it didn’t make sense to us why we had her stood still for 10 seconds, as she wouldn’t have done that in real life. Also, some of the sound was a little bit off. Apart from that I am happy with our film.

Preliminary Task

Hey there, For the preliminary task, we are required to create a short piece of film, showing a character opening a door, walking into a room and exchanging a few lines of dialect. We have to create a storyline, film it, and edit it all ourselves. I am looking forward to being creatively challenged in all of these aspects. I am working with my two friends, Phoebe and Shannon, who are also very keen to get started and see how our film turns out. Phoebe and Shannon are taking the roles of acting in the film whilst I operate the camera and lighting. As well as starring in the production, both of my fellow students will be managing the props, set and any other details part of the mise en scene. We are all going to share the responsibility of editing and each do our part during that process. The task requires us to involve 3 techniques of filming in our film. they are: Match on Action The change of perspective in a scene which shows a flow of events without you even noticing that this is all camera work. 180 Degree Rule The rule that states that you always have to keep within 180 degrees when you are filming characters talking or in certain still positions. If this rule is not applied , then it can confuse viewers as to where there characters are in a room and often leave them feeling disorientated. Shot Reverse Shot Shooting a conversational scene where the shot shows one person talking and then switches to the other person talking.
